Abstract

The phenomenon of misunderstanding between the speaker and the hearer is the common problem in society. Sometimes the speaker says something, but actually he intends to say another thing. Besides the literal meaning, some utterances have intended meanings. The study which explores about meaning is called pragmatics. Pragmatics focuses on speech acts. In this study the writer focused on speech acts, especially in indirect speech acts. This study tells about how a speaker utters something, but he intends different meaning from what he states. In this study, the writer took the utterances of the main characters of “Elizabeth the Golden Age” movie, because this movie has setting of English Renaissance Period, where the literature grew rapidly. There are three problems that the writer analyzed in this study: the indirect speech acts, the classification of indirect speech acts, and the meaning of indirect speech acts. This study used qualitative research design because the data were in non-numerical form. They were collected in the form of words; it is not in the form of numbers like in experimental research. The object of the study was the indirect speech acts said by the main characters in “Elizabeth the Golden Age” movie. The result of this study showed that there were 43 utterances of indirect speech acts found in “Elizabeth the Golden Age” movie. The writer classified the indirect speech acts based on five Searle’s classification; they are asssertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. Based on the data she found, she classified 26 utterances of assertive, 12 utterances of directives, 4 utterances of commisives, 1 utterance of expressives, and she did not find the declaration, because the utterances formed in declarations in that movie cannot classify as indirect speech acts. Then the writer described the meaning of the indirect speech acts which she found based on Grace’s theory of implicature.
