Abstract

This study took "Pride and Prejudice" novel by Jane Austen as the object of the study. "Pride and Prejudice" was a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story followed the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as dealt with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. In this study, the research problems proposed were: (1) What social conflicts are faced by the main characters of "Pride and Prejudice" novel? (2) What are the causes of those conflicts? (3)How do the main characters overcome the conflicts? This study used qualitative research design to obtain and analyze the data. Moreover, in analyzing the "Pride and Prejudice" novel, the researcher used objective approach because the researcher only studied the content of the novel itself.The object of this study was "Pride and Prejudice" novel by Jane Austen. Reading and understanding the novel, collecting, selecting and examining the data toward paragraphs or dialogues in the novelwere the processes of obtaining the data. Furthermore, in analyzing the data, the researcher did some processes. Those were reviewing and analyzing the data based on the classifications, interpreting each paragraph and event of the novel "Pride and Prejudice", and drawing conclusion based on analyzing data. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that there were five social conflicts that faced by the main character of pride and prejudice novel. Those were the social conflict between Elizabeth and Mr. Collins, Elizabeth and her mother, Elizabeth and Charlotte, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and Lady Catherine De Bourgh. The main reason that made the social conflict of this study was because the perspective of the marriage. In addition, the solutions offered by the main character of novel pride and prejudice were giving an explanation, asking for apology, and calming down herself.
