Abstract

One of the problems in teaching and learning activity that must be paid attention by the teachers is about the quality of the textbook which is used. Textbook is materials of instruction in certain subject (in this case is English subject) that is arranged by some experts for instructional purposes to support teaching program. As a teaching media, textbook has some important roles, such as in individualization of instruction, organization of instruction, and improvement of teaching. Because of that important role, so, teacher must be selective in choosing the textbook that will be used, in order teaching and learning activities can be run effectively and successfully. Therefore, the writer is interested to analyze the quality of SMP English textbook published by Erlangga. The purpose of this study is to know the quality of SMP English textbook published by Erlangga. This study used a descriptive design. The population of this study is also the sample. That is the textbook for the first year students used at SMP Negeri 3 Pamekasan published by Erlangga. And the data was taken by sending checklist to the three English teachers who used this textbook. The findings of this study show that the final score percentage of the textbook is is 83 %. It is categorized as good. So, the general quality of the textbook is good. And the quality of each aspect is: Total score percentage of subject matter is 83 %. It is categorized as good; Total score percentage of vocabulary and structures is 80 %. It is categorized as good; Total score percentage of exercises is 91 %. It is categorized as excellent; Total score percentage of illustration is 73 %. It is categorized as good; And total score percentage of physical appearance is 87 %. It is categorized as excellent.
