Abstract

This study aimed at investigating teaching methods used by the English teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo Mojokerto. The use of teaching methods could make the students easier in understanding the material. The students could more pay attention to the lesson during the teaching and learning process. This study focused on the methods used by the English teacher in teaching seventh grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo Mojokerto. This study used narrative qualitative research design. The subject of this study was an English teacher of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo Mojokerto. To collect the data, two kinds of instruments were used: interview and observation checklist. Therefore, the researcher interviewed the English teacher and observed the classroom activities. The result of this study showed that the English teacher used two kinds of teaching methods. Those methods were grammar translation method and audio lingual method. For the implementation of the methods in teaching and learning process, the teacher found some problems. The first problem related to the media that teacher used in teaching and learning process such as book, LCD projector, and tape recorder. Sometimes, the media such as LCD projector and tape recorder did not work well. It made the time for the implementation of teaching and learning process shorter. The teacher overcame this problem by trying to find other solutions. For instance, the teacher read the dialog by herself and found the technical officer to fix it. For the book, it was not enough to develop the material. To solve this problem, the teacher worked for another source to develop the material. Another problem was related to the students. In this case, the teacher found more extensive problems. First, the students did not pay attention to the teacher`s instruction. Then, the teacher came close to the students and gave them warning immediately. Second problem, the students got difficulties in pronouncing the sentences. Then, the teacher repeated the sentences. Third, The students also felt difficult to understand teacher`s questions. Then, the teacher repeated the questions and translated to Bahasa.
