Abstract

Scientific approach is one of the approaches proposed in 2013 curriculum. It involves five phases such us observing, questioning, associating, experimenting, and networking. Since it is a new approach proposed in teaching and learning process, there are some potential problems may occur. Therefore, the aims of this study are to find out the students problems in the implementation of five phases scientific approach and the students way to cope with the problems. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The populations of this study were the two hundred twenty eight students who learned English at eighth grade in SMP Negeri 18 Malang. Moreover, the researcher chose forty students to be sample of this study. The researcher collected the data through the observations, interviewed sample, and documentation. The observation was done for eight times in every class. The data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, and describing the problems and the studentsÂ’ way to cope their problems. From the result of interview and observation showed that the students have problems in scientific approach implementation such as confused about the material that presented by the teacher, asking some questions using English, they felt shy and afraid of making mistakes in English, the English book and the LKS were not enough to search information about the material, difficult to use English for their communication. Besides, the studentsÂ’ also had some ways to cope their problems such as the students asked to their friends and teacher, looked up the difficult word in the dictionary, brave to bring up their opinion, combined their speaking with Bahasa Indonesia, read again the material that was given by the teacher, and increase their self-confidence. As the result, it made the students active in learning English subject in every phase of scientific approach implementation.
