Abstract

Literature provides a way to comprehend thing by using language as its medium. Poem as an example of literature provides people to comprehend the thing related to life. In comprehending the poem, people need to know the kind of language expression or style used so that the meaning conveyed will be able to be well understood. This study was focused on a piece of poem, which is the lyric of song; in which this study was aimed at: 1) identifying the kinds of figurative language used in Vessel album by Twenty One Pilots band, 2) explaining the meaning of figurative languages used in Vessel album by Twenty One Pilots band. The design applied in this study was descriptive qualitative, in which this study descriptively presented the data in form of words instead of numeric analysis. Besides, this study was related to understanding some aspect of social life. Furthermore, objective approach was employed in this study because the researcher was focusing the study on the lyric of the song in itself without dealing with any kind of environing world of the poem, such as the author as well the audience. After analyzing the song lyrics, the researcher found that the most type of figurative language used by four songs that have been analyzed was metaphor, in which there were as much as 25 lyrics (54.3%) of the total lyrics. Meanwhile, the researcher found that there were the equal findings about the use of simile, personification, and irony; there were as much as 3 lyrics (6.5%). The last one is the use of allegory, in which there was as much as 1 lyric (2.2%). Since figurative language is used when something is meant to have different interpretation than the actual meaning of the words, the author of the song lyric used figurative language to get some special meanings and to make the lyric more vividly as well as to color the text of the lyric.
