Abstract

Feedback is information in the form of formative assessment which teacher provides toward studentsÂ’ performance or understanding. It facilitates and helps students to achieve the aim of teaching-learning process. It can also give students a supportive motivation and learning opportunities. Furthermore, it is a must for the teacher to select the appropriate feedback in teaching English writing. This research was conducted for the purpose of analyzing the feedback used by English teachers in teaching writing at SMPN 2 Nguling. In addition, the researcher aimed at gathering information about the problems that emerged during the implementation of the feedback and the teachersÂ’ way to deal with those problems. Descriptive qualitative design was employed within this research. The data were taken from the teachers who teach seventh grade students at SMPN 2 Nguling. The data were the teachersÂ’ answer as the result of interview, the observation checklist, and the observation field note. In the data collection, the interview guide in semi-structured interview, checklist and field note in the non-participant observation were used because this research obtained the data from the teachersÂ’ experiences. From the analysis, some findings were gained. The result of the analysis showed that two kinds of corrective feedback used in teaching writing at SMPN 2 Nguling, which were explicit and implicit feedback. The researcher found that the teachers use most explicit feedback and few implicit feedback in teaching writing.. Moreover, the researcher found that the most frequently emerging problems that were experienced by the teachers at SMPN 5 Malang were class management and studentsÂ’ misbehavior. In addition, the researcher found that the teachers tried to overcome the problem by doing some actions to keep class under control and to keep teaching learning process running well. The actions were different from one teacher to another. The result of the observation showed that the actions taken by the teachers were working effectively to solve the problem that emerged.
