Abstract

Novel "Negeri 5 Menara" is one of the famous novel in Indonesia which has potential issues to be investigated how the figurative language of pesantren student is translated. In 2011, this novel was translated by Angie Kilbane into English with titled "The Land of Five Towers". The purpose of this study was to identify the types of AhmadÂ’s figurative language as pesantren student found in "Negeri 5 Menara" novel and also to identify the translation procedure of the figurative language found. This study used qualitative research design. The object of this study was Ahmad on the novel. The data analysis of this study was formulated into two procedures. The first procedure was to figure out the types of Ahmad's figurative language as pesantren student found in the selected chapter while the second procedure was to identify the translation procedure of each types of figurative language found. The first procedure was formulated as follows: classifying and categorizing the types of Ahmad's figurative language, describing and discussing the figurative language used and taking conclusion while the next procedure was formulated as follows: identifying the procedure of Ahmad's figurative language found, categorizing the translation procedure, and drawing conclusion. This study showed the following findings. There are eleven types of figurative language and ten translation procedure were found in Ahmad's sentences as pesantren student on novel "Negeri 5 Menara" and its translation version. Those types that found were simile, hyperbole, idiom, onomatopeia, personification, metaphor, imagery, allusion, synecdoche, assonance, and alliteration. The translation procedure of Ahmad's figurative language found were as follows: synonymy, transposition, paraphrase, through translation, cultural equivalent, reduction, transference, descriptive equivalent, naturalization, and recognized translation.
