Abstract

This research aimed to determine and describe the errors in using simple present tenses in writing descriptive texts made by students, especially the eighth-graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Malang. This study used mix between qualitative and quantitative research design because the researcher wanted to describe the errors and the frequency of errors found in descriptive text. The object taken for this study was the paper work of the eighth-grade student of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Malang. The total of the students were 23. This study used the document analysis because the researcher obtained the data from the task. The researcher took some steps to analyze the data namely identifying the error, classifying the error, and counting the percentage the error to get the most dominant of the errors. The data were obtained by conducting a task. In this research found some types of errors, such as Linguistic Category Taxonomy consist of syntax-morphology and semantics-lexicon, Surface Strategy Taxonomy consist of omission, addition, and misformation, and Communicative Effect Taxonomy consist of global error. The result of this research was presented numeric and descriptively. From the result, the omission errors were found as the highest of occurrence, which was about 50% which revealed that the eight graders of acceleration class still made errors in using simple present tense in writing descriptive text. Then, misformation has 10 numbers of errors with frequency 29.41%. In the other hand, addition has 4 numbers of errors with frequency 11.76%. In the same time, global error, syntax-morphology, and semantics-lexicon have the similarity in number of errors and frequency, they have a number of error with frequency 2.94%.
