Abstract

As one of the basic competence, reading has an important role to help the students to be able to communicate in English and to create a discourse. By reading the students can comprehend the meaning and develop the rhetoric in the text. To make a good comprehension in reading, the teacher can use top-down and bottom-up technique. In this study, the writer described the implementation of top-down and bottom-up technique, the problems faced by teacher, and the ways teacher coped with the problems. The reason of conducting this study was because most of students or learners who are learning second or foreign language assumed that reading is the most essential skill to master due to some reasons. The writer realized how important reading in learning English. Second, top-down and bottom-up technique is a new technique in reading class implemented by the teacher in MTs Terpadu Kalipang Timur. Furthermore, those techniques of this study basically different in their implementation. These differences considerably caused some occurring problems during their implementation. Therefore, this was an interesting topic to conduct further research and analysis. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. Meanwhile, the research instruments used were observation checklist and interview to the teacher to gather the data based on the statement of problems. The finding showed that there were some steps in applying top-down techniques, they were: evoking the students’ thought by the title and the pictures; activating the students’ appropriate prior knowledge, asking the student to make some predictions by using their background knowledge, and confirming their predictions. Meanwhile, in bottom-up technique there were some steps like decoding the smallest parts of written language (individual words), combining the individual words together to form phrases, combining the phrases together to form sentence, then grouping the sentences to get an understanding to the author’s written message. The writer also found some problems faced by the teacher such as less preparation from the teacher, students’ lack of vocabulary and narrow background knowledge, poor concentration of students, and the students’ difficulties in recognizing grammatical form. However, the teacher also had the solutions to cope with those problems such as adding more pictures, teacher’s self-evaluation, reading more books, keeping an active communication between the teacher and students, improving the time management etc.
