Abstract

Nowadays, English is an International language. It has an important role in delivering information, especially in global era. In Indonesia, English become compulsory subject at the junior and senior high school and also university level. Here, teaching English is not the simple thing. It is not easy for Indonesia students to learn and understand English quickly. The teacher should be smart in choosing suitable techniques that are effective for learners. The aims of this study are to investigate what techniques are used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary, to find out the difficulties faced by the teacher, and to explore how the teacher cope the difficulties. This study employed descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study is an English teacher at PKBM Ma’dinul Ulum Tulungagung. To collect the data, the researcher used document, observation checklist, and interview with the teacher. The findings reveal that there are three types of English vocabulary teaching technique used by the teacher, they were: a) translation technique, b) using dictionary technique, and c) asking others technique. The teacher faced three difficulties in teaching English vocabulary, they were as follows: a) most of the students lack of vocabularies, so they are difficult to understand teacher’s explanation, b) the students have low motivation to school, and c) almost of the students was working in the morning until afternoon, so they are lazy to come to school. To cope those problems the teacher has her own way, they were: a) in coping students’ lack of vocabulary, she explained the material twice or more to the students, b) to cope student’s motivation, she gave the motivation to students that studying is not only for getting certificate but also the knowledge, c) to solve the students’ laziness, the teacher tried to create fun activities, such as game or some jokes.
