Abstract

Defense Of The Ancient (DOTA) is one the happening games nowadays which possesses many jargons used while being played. Most gamers frequently require a number of terms in order to perform effective and efficient communication. In this study, the researcher is interested in investigating the use of jargon used by Defense Of The Ancient (DOTA) gamer community. This study is attempted to answer (1) the word formation processes of jargon, and (2) the meanings of jargon. In analyzing the game, the researcher used qualitative research design. The subject of the study was Defense Of The Ancient (DOTA) gamers community. The gamers observed were connected on free.indogamers server. The instruments used were participant observation and document. The findings of this study showed that the word formation processes of jargon used by Defense Of The Ancient (DOTA) gamers community involved borrowing, clipping, and acronym. There were 9 jargons in borrowing process, 6 jargons in clipping process, and 14 jargons in acronym process. It could be concluded that there were 3 types of word formation processes of jargon and 29 jargons in total including the meaning for each term. The researcher suggested that the result of this study will be useful for English teachers in linguistic field, the amateur gamers, and the next researchers. For English teachers in linguistic field, the outcomes could be used as references for enriching vocabulary taught to the students. Hence, the amateur gamers could use the terms as manual guide for playing the game. In addition, the next researchers could investigate the next sequel of game, DOTA2, which evolved to international level.
