Abstract

Literature is a product from human thinking. Literature is the art of occupation of a literary writer. Moreover, literature often attempts to convey something important about life (West, 2010). By reading literary works especially novel, the readers can improve their understanding about life in every aspect. Novel is also a picture of human behaviour and signal of time which it was written. The study focuses on the kinds of Finger spelling teaching strategy, the implementation of Finger spelling teaching strategy, the problems and also the solution in implementing Finger spelling teaching strategy that were used by Anne Sullivan in Helen Keller novel written by Helen Adams Keller. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The object of the study was the teaching strategy in the novel entitled Helen Keller novel written by Helen Adams Keller. The research data were taken from paragraphs, dialogues and events in the novel. The result of this study indicated that the kinds of Finger spelling teaching strategy employed by Anne Sullivan was emphasized in American Sign Language. In implementing Finger spelling strategy, Anne did two steps: introducing the word and explaining how the word looked like. There were some problems found by Anne in implementing Finger spelling strategy such as Helen’s hyperactivity, Helen’s parents’ (Mr. Arthur and Mrs. Martha Keller) coddle and Helen did not understand the meaning of the word. Anne solved the problems in implementing Finger spelling strategy by doing the following things. Firstly, both Anne and Helen lived together in another house. Secondly, Anne gave some activities to Helen to make her comfortable.Thirdly, Helen’s parents were taught to use Finger spelling strategy. Finally, Anne taught Obey, one of Helen’s close friends, to use Finger spelling. The strategy used by Anne Sullivan was succeessful in teaching disabled students.
