Abstract
It is necessary to conduct a literary research like film which discusses society behavior in order to give additional information and lesson about recent phenomenon to the society. ‘’The Picture of Dorian GrayÂ’Â’ was the film adapted from the Oscar Wilde's novel in 1890 and has been released twice, which first directed by Albert Lewin in 1945 and the second was directed by Oliver Parker in 2000. This film tells about Dorian Gray, was obsessed with anti aging and became hedonist or pleasure seeker where the main thing that affected it was anti-aging. Related to this phenomenon, the research problems are formulated as the following: (1) What was Dorian GrayÂ’s anti aging on Oliver ParkerÂ’s film ‘’The Picture of Dorian GrayÂ’Â’? (2) How did Dorian Gray do anti aging on Oliver ParkerÂ’s film ‘’The Picture of Dorian GrayÂ’Â’? (3) What was the effect of Dorian GrayÂ’s anti aging to himself on Oliver ParkerÂ’s film ‘’The Picture of Dorian GrayÂ’Â’? This research uses qualitative research while the data are displayed in the form of descriptive. This research uses Dorian GrayÂ’s anti aging in ‘’The Picture of Dorian GrayÂ’Â’ film. In analyzing Dorian GrayÂ’s anti aging, the researcher firstly reviews the collected data that are indicated as Dorian GrayÂ’s anti aging, then shorts the data into three categories based on the research problems. The next step is interpreting those three categories scene by scene of this film based on the written theories in chapter II of this research. Before drawing the conclusion, the researcher compares the findings and the theory to find the correlation as well as the gap between them. Based on the liberal-humanism approach, an approach that studies human’s behaviors and his capabilities; the researcher found the Dorian Gray's anti-aging visible from the appearance of Dorian who remain young even he has been around 70Â’s, the amazement of Dorian’s friends when they saw him after so many years not to see, and the oddity of Dorian’s appearance who looked same with Emily, Lord Henry’s daughter while he should be as age as Lord Henry. Researcher also found that the thing that made him not aging was by doing an exchange to eternal life and he also often acted like young people. Anti aging committed by Dorian gave some impacts to him, like: he was admired by many women, he was also influenced by hedonism where his life had only one goal: life pleasure.
