Abstract

Method is a process of planning, selecting and grading language materials and items, also techniques of teaching which guides teacher how to teach and how his teaching may be effective. Therefore, teaching method takes an important role in teaching-learning process. This is because the success of teaching-learning activity is influenced by how the method is implemented. In addition, teacher should be able to choose an appropriate method since it contains the way the teacher teaches. Furthermore, SMPN 1 Pakel is one of junior high schools in Tulungagung which uses the teaching method based on the curriculum applied in the school. SMPN 1 Pakel is also one of junior schools in Tulungagung which applied School-Based Curriculum for ninth grade and Curriculum 2013 for seventh and eighth grades. This research was conducted for the purpose of analysing the English teaching methods used by the English teachers in teaching English in School-Based Curriculum and Curriculum 2013 at SMPN 1 Pakel-Tulungagung. In addition, the writer aims to investigate the problems faced by the English teachers in implementing the methods and their ways to solve those problems. Qualitative design was employed in this research. The data were taken from the teachers who teach the ninth grade and seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Pakel. The data were the teachersÂ’ answers as the result of interview, the observation checklist, and the observation field note. In the data collection, the interview guide was semi-structured interview, checklist and field note in the non-participant observation were used because this research obtained the data from the teachersÂ’ experiences. From the analysis, some findings were gained. The result of the analysis showed that the teaching methods used in School-Based Curriculum and Curriculum 2013 were different. The writer proved it by analyzing the teaching-learning steps done by the English teachers. The teaching methods had been classified into two categories which were Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Language Teaching. Moreover, the writer found that the most frequent emerging problems that were experienced by the teachers at SMPN 1 Pakel was class management which is explained clearly in the chapter IV of this thesis. Nevertheless, the writer also discovered that the teachers tried to overcome the problems by doing several actions to keep the class and teaching-learning process well-controlled. The actions taken by both teachers were almost same. The result of the observation showed that the actions done by the teachers worked effectively to solve the problems.
