Abstract

Nowadays, English is very important to be learned that must be provided for the students to develop their skill. By applying some techniques in teaching learning English vocabulary, it is hoped that students will be interested in learning English vocabulary. This study focused on the techniques of teaching vocabulary used by the teacher. This research was conducted at SMP Muhamadiyah 4 Malang. The purposes of this study were: (1) to know the techniques of teaching vocabulary used by the teacher, (2) to know how the English teacher implements the techniques in the teaching and learning process, (3) to know the teacher’s reasons of using the techniques in teaching vocabulary. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design to obtain the data concerning with the research problems. The subject of this study was one English teacher. There were two instruments used to collect the data in this study, they were observation checklist and semi-unstructured interview. The findings showed that the teacher applied five techniques in teaching and learning English vocabulary; (1) Using visual technique: she gave some pictures of things like classroom things to the students, (2) Using translation technique: she translated word by word, (3) Using asking others technique: she asked the students to ask her what words that they did not understand in their task, (4) Using dictionary technique: she asked the students to use dictionary to find the meaning of words in their task, (5) Using game technique: she gave puzzle game. Then, the teacher’s reasons of choosing those techniques were: (1) Using visual technique: she wants to help the student’s ability in pronouncing the words, (2) Using translation technique: she wants to help the students to understand the meaning of words correctly, (3) Using asking others technique: she wants to create the liveliness of the students in learning,(4) Using dictionary technique: she wanted to train them to open dictionary, find the meaning of words by themselves, (5) Using game technique: she wanted to make the students more active and creative in the class.
