Abstract

Writing activity was one of the four activities in teaching learning English. In the teaching learning process, the students and teachers needed textbook as a source of learning especially in writing activity. This study analyzed the three English textbooks based on the 2006 English curriculum; they were The Bridge English Competence published by Yudhistira, English on Sky textbook published by Erlangga, and Through the World published by Arya Duta. Therefore, the purposes of this study were (1) to know the writing activities in The Bridge English Competence published by Yudhistira, the English on Sky published by Erlangga, and the Through the World published by Arya Duta, (2) to know which textbook had the most variety and the least variety of writing activities among the three textbooks, (3) and to know whether the writing activities in the first grade of SMP English textbooks are relevant or suitable based on the 2006 Curriculum. To obtain the information about writing activities that was present in the three textbooks, this study used descriptive qualitative research design. Meanwhile, to collect the data of this study, documentation was used as an instrument. The findings of this study showed that (1) writing activities in The Bridge English Competence textbook were completing, matching, answering, writing, finding, arranging, categorizing, guessing, making, and mentioning activity. While, in the English on Sky textbook were completing, matching, answering, writing, finding, arranging, categorizing, making, choosing, putting, drawing, adding, puzzling, changing, and labeling activity. Moreover, in the Through the World textbook were completing, matching, answering, writing, finding, arranging, categorizing, and guessing activity. (2) The English on Sky textbook had the most variety of writing activities, that was fifteen various and the Through the World textbook had the least variety of writing activities that was only eight various. (3) The writing activities that were relevant and suitable with the standard and basic competence stated in the 2006 Curriculum according to three English textbooks were completing, arranging, writing and making activity. Based on the result of study, it was suggest for headmasters and English teachers in Junior High School to select the appropriate textbooks as a source in teaching learning process especially in writing activity. Whereas, for the English book writers, it was suggest deciding which parts of the textbook needed improvement. The last for the next researchers, it was suggest investigating the writing activities in other textbooks.
