Abstract

Internet enables people to communicate and get information sources easily.Therefore, internet can be accepted well by people, especially for students. Internet has facilities that support the academic process. In writing thesis process, internet has function as a tool for locating the references and gathering the data. Moreover,internet has some advantages in academic research. Therefore, this study was intended to identify three statements of problem; 1) what is the students’ perception of the use of internet as reference to support writing thesis at English department of UMM in academic year 2010. 2) what is the students’ perception of the use of internet as a tool for communication to support writing thesis at English department of UMM in academic year 2010. 3) what is the students’ perception of the advantages of internet to support writing thesis at English department of UMM in cademic year 2010.The research design used in this study was descriptive quantitative. It was intended to describe the studentsÂ’ perception of the use of internet as reference and as tool for communication to support writing thesis and students’ perception of the advantages of internet to support writing thesis. The researcher used students of English department of UMM in academic year 2010 who are in the process of finishing their thesis as the population. The total of population was 117 students. The researcher used random sampling technique and took 30 of them as sample. The research instrument in this study was questionnaire. The result of the studying shows that the students’ perception of the use of internet as reference was good (68,94%). Students’ perception of the use of internet as tool for communication was good (69,16%). Then, students’ perception of the advantages of internet to support writing thesis was excellent (80%).
