Abstract

Confrontational question and interruption are common devices used in verbal interaction, both formally and informally. In news interview, those devices are commonly used by interviewer to ellicit information from the interviewee. This study was conducted to identify the confrontational questions and interruptions the interviewer of TV One and that of Metro TV used and then discovered the influence in reflecting the stances of both television stations in relation to Surya Paloh. This descriptive qualitative study used document analysis as the research method since its objects of the study were confrontational questions and interruptions used by the interviewers of both stations based on the interviews’ transcripts. The instruments used to collect the data was the researcher himself (human instrument). This study revealed that Metro TV interviewer used more confrontational questions and interruptions than TV One interviewer. The former used presuppositions and assertions in the questions whereas the latter did not use assertions. Then, the Metro TV Interviewer’s interruptions were mostly in the forms of vocal acknowedging actions while the TV One Interviewer’s were in the forms of sentence. These findings reflected that Metro TV was more enthusiastic and built stronger degree of familiarity to boost up the personality of Surya Paloh rather than TV One.
