Abstract

English is language used almost around the world. As the foreign language in Indonesia, English is taught in formal and informal education institution. In learning languages, one component that plays an important role is vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of important components in learning English which is taught in Junior High School. In fact, not only general Junior High School taught English vocabulary to their students but also Junior High School for exceptional children (SMPLB). One type of exceptional children is mental retardation student. Mental retardation is defined as an IQ score below 70-75. Educational program for those kids must be designed, implemented, and evaluated sytematically in order to make the goal of teaching learning processes especially in teaching Englih vocabulary can be achieved by the students more effectively and efficiently. In this study, the writer wants investigate the procedures of implementation language games model in teaching English vocabulary for mild mental retardation students. The design in this study was a descriptive research design because it was designed in order to get the information by describing the characteristics of particular individual, phenomena, or of a group. Meanwhile, the research tools used were observation checklist and interview guide to gather the data. The findings showed that the procedures used by the English teacher in teaching English vocabulary in SMPLB Bina Karya Lawang were opening, modeling, practicing, evaluation, feedback and reflection. Based on the finding is the teacher implemented almost the same procedures for every meeting. The differences are the activities done by the teacher related with the games which is implemented. By using those procedures above, it seems that the students enthusiastic, enjoyable, and interested in teaching learning processes especially in teaching English. From those procedures, the most preferred procedure by the students was practicing which contains games. It was indicated by the positive responds given by the students. It can be concluded that the procedure of language games model used by the English teachers in teaching English vocabulary in SMPLB Bina Karya Lawang are five procedures. The procedure prefered by the students was practice which contains games. The writer gave suggestion for principal that she should support the teacher and facilitate with enough media. The writer also gave a suggestion for teacher that he must be able to understand the material and must be able to keep his willing in order to make students enjoyable and interested in learning. For the students, the writer hopes they not only learn vocabulary in the class but also out of the class. The last suggestion was given for the further researcher, hopefully this research is continued in the future to see the effectiveness oflanguage games model applied by English teacher.
