Abstract

In Indonesia English is a foreign language, not a second language. As a result, it is very difficult for the students to write a paragraph in English. This is because writing is one of the skills that has complex process that need writers to explore their thought and ideas and make them visible. Whereas, writing, especially in English is an important subject to master. To solve the problem, one of the efforts which can be done is through picture cards. The purpose of this study is to find whether the use of picture cards can improve students’ writing skill of the first year students at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Kraton Pasuruan or not. The research design was quasi experimental. The sample of this research was the students of X-C and X-D. The instruments used to collect the data were pre-test and post-test, then, the data was analyzed by using independent sample test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that picture cards was effective to improve students’ writing skill of the first year students at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Kraton Pasuruan. There was significant difference of mean scores of both classes. In fact, the mean score of the post test of the experimental class was higher than the mean score of the post test of the control class. The result of this research implies that English teachers should consider using the picture cards in teaching writing because it helps students to improve their writing skill.
