Abstract

In current globalization era, cooperation among countries is not only in the economic field but also in the education field. In Indonesia, there are many kinds of scholarship program in secondary and higher education. One of them is Erasmus Mundus scholarship. Erasmus Mundus is a kind of scholarship program which aims to enchance quality in higher education through scholarship and academic cooperation between Europe. It offers several programs such as Joint Programmes, Partnership, and Promotion of European higher education. University of Muhammadiyah Malang is one of the universities in Indonesia which held Erasmus Mundus. Through Erasmus Mundus scholarship program, UMM students could improve the quality of their education. In studying abroad, the students faced many challenges, such as language barrier. Therefore, this is an interesting topic to be conducted as research and analysis. This research focuses on UMM students language barrier problems in joiningErasmus Mundus and the ways to solve their problems. There are two statements of problems in this research. Those are; (1)what are the problems on language barrier faced by UMM students in joining Erasmus Mundus?, (2) how the ways to solve the language barrier faced by the UMM students in joining Erasmus Mundus?. This research implemented qualitative as the research to find out the concering experiences of UMM students who faced language barrier in joining Erasmus Mundus in form of the words rather than numbers. The subjects were four students who once joined Erasmus Mundus in Portugal, Italy, Polandia, and Latvia. Furthermore, this research were used documents and interview. The documents were an articles written by the students and the interview used semi structured interview. The result of the analysis, the UMM students found two problems on language barrier, they were language barrier in academic and social environment. In academic, the students faced language barrier on volume, tone of voice, gender expectation, personal space, and timing. In social environment, the UMM students faced language barrier in living in the dormitory, looking for food in the restaurant, and sight seeing in the market. The ways of the UMM students to solve the problem such as; joining language class, using dictionary and gesture, mixing with English, inviting their friends to “hang out”, learning language with their friends, reading a lot of books, listening to the conversations in internet.
