Abstract

Register refers to specific words in certain social groups. It is part of language variety and purposed to make communication easier within certain groups. For example, skateboarding community has term such as Homies, which means the kateboarder from surrounding area. Homies sounds unfamiliar for common people because it is only understood by kateboarding ommunity. Therefore, register is interesting to investigate because it is about special language in certain community which cannot be understood by common students. The skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang is chosen because this community is under alangSkateboardScene (MSS) and joined by the students from some colleges and surrounding communities. The objectives of this study were to identify the registers used by the skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang and to investigate the meaning of the registers used by the skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The research design of this study was qualitative research because it did not use statistical analysis of numeric data, but descriptive data. The data were collected in natural setting and used words to explain the phenomena related to the registers and their meaning used by the skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Interview and observation were the instruments of collecting the data. After analyzing the data, it was found that: 1) The registers used by the skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang were 44 registers found in the conversation; 2) The meaning of the registers used by the skateboarding community at University of Muhammadiyah Malang were mostly categorized into conceptual meaning because the registers refers to the logical sense of the utterance and is recognizable. Beside that, associative and affective were also foundbecause somedrew on certain mental connections based on the real-world experience rather than the linguistic context and more directly a reflection of the speaker’s personal attitude or feelings towards the listener or the target of the utterance.
