Abstract

Both of language and action cannot be separated. When people produce an utterance, they do not only show their ability to produce a sentence, but also to deliver a specific function, such as, stating, asking, commanding, requesting, and apologizing. It means that people perform an act by using language which is called speech act. Speech act can be found in movie, such as “Mandela Long Walk to Freedom” movie by Justin Chadwick. The writer identified the speech act utterances from the dialogue used by the main character and analyzed into three levels of speech act, there were: locutionary act, illocuttionary act, and perlocutionary act and describe the contextual meaning of speech act. This study was qualitative research design to know the kinds of speech act, and what contextual meaning of speech act used by the main character in “Mandela Long Walk to Freedom” movie. The objects of this study were the utterances used by the main character. The instrument used in this study was the writer as the primary instrument to collect the data. Also, the writer applied pragmatic approach, as the writer focused only on the kinds and contextual meaning of speech act with being influenced by the authorÂ’s life, the background of the works or the background of the society. The findings of this study showed that, from 97 speech act utterances produced by Mandela categorized as an illocutionary act, there were assertives, directives, and commisives. Mandela mostly used assertives in his speech. Mandela used assertives because he tended to give the statements and claims to his society about the freedom. Additionally, after analyzing Mandela`s speech act, it can be identified the purposes of his speech, such as: to command, to describe, and to claim. It can be concluded that the main character more likely used illocutionary act, namely assertives, commisives, and directives. Furthermore, through analyzing people`s speech act, it can be concluded that people’s speech consists of a meaning that it was not only the meaning of the utterance but also the intended meaning beyond it.
