Abstract

2013 Curriculum is known as competency and character based curriculum in which this curriculum applies new instructional models, roles, and rules. Therefore, in this case, it widely requires students to apply the appropriate kinds of strategies to gain the aim of 2013 English curriculum. In this present study, the researcher intended to investigate the kinds of seventh-grade students' learning strategies in 2013 English curriculum at SMPN 1 Malang. In addition, the researcher also investigated the influence of those strategies toward students’ achievement in English subject. Those investigations were aimed to finding kinds of language learning strategies that students applied and whether those strategies gave good or bad influence toward students’ achievement in mastering English subject. This study applied mix research designs. Quantitative research design provides a beneficial end to the researcher in collecting the data relating to the kind of strategies that students applied in mastering English subject. Meanwhile, qualitative research design would be one of the most appropriate research designs to collect the data relating to influence of learners’ strategies on students’ achievement in English subjects. The target population of this study was seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Malang in 2014/2015 academic year. The sample of this study was students of D, E, F, and G Class, which consisted of 32 students for each class. The samples were taken by using purposive sampling procedure. The result of this study showed that there were six kinds of language learning strategies on the observable students; certain language learning strategies appeared frequently rather than the other strategies. The result also showed that strategies that students applied gave good and bad influence toward students’ achievement in mastering English subjects. The result was strengthened by score which students achieved in middle test. Some of them could pass the passing grade/ minimum standard criteria (=80) and others could not pass the passing grade. To sum up, the students who could not achieve the passing grade were regarded as ineffective students; meanwhile, students who could achieve the passing grade were regarded as effective students.
