Abstract

Theater is one of less popular arts or extraordinary culture that brings the spirit of freedom to create without any pressure or restriction on the ideals of working for its adherents. As the time goes by, more and more fans of the theater continues to grow in number. Most of the members are younger generation who want to work with their ideals without having to follow the public taste. Although it is impressed underground and does not want to do a general way, this is the typical of Sinden Theater brought by its artists in doing something in his own way. Sinden Theater exists in Faculty of Social and Political Science, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Before it was inaugurated on December 24, 1994 as Semi-Autonomous Organization (LSO), Sinden Theater has stood alone, free-spirited, and independent since 1992. Students are future generations who are the backbone of a State. They have a great responsibility to determine the direction and objectives of the Indonesian nation. One implementation is in terms of artistic activity. This makes the researcher interested in conducting the research. The title of the research is "THE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION TO BECOME MEMBERS OF THE THEATER (A Study on Semi-Autonomous Organization (LSO) Sinden Theater of Faculty of Social and Political Science, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.) Problems that were examined: (1). What are the students motivation to become the members of Sinden Theater, (2). What needs to be obtained through Theater Sinden, (3). What are the obstacles and challenges faced by students in theater arts. The study used descriptive qualitative research and purposive sampling technique. The data was obtained through interviews and observations. The results of this study were: (1) because of the students’ hobby and to explore theater, (2) to distribute the talent, (3) to learn to organize, (4) to study theater, (5) to know about the theater. While the needs that can be obtained through the Sinden Theater were: (1) brotherhood and kinship, (2) satisfaction, (3) knowledge and science, (4) the maximum recognition from a large family of Sinden Theater, (5) adding the experience. Meanwhile, the obstacles or challenges faced by the members of the Sinden Theater were as follows: (1) the difficulty in allocating their time between attending the lecture and theater, (2) the totality of theater arts, (3) the internal conflicts that occur between members, (4) the time restriction by the campus units.
