Abstract

English is a foreign language in Indonesia. Textbook and other publications are mostly written in the form of English. In order to read it, people must understand English. However, understanding English is not easy for the people because learning English is learning its component. It indicates that teaching English is far from success in finishing the whole learning process from SLTP up to SMU. English is necessary focused on the basic language skills; those are listening, speaking, writing and reading. This study was aimed to get the answer of the research problem, namely (1) what are the teacher’s problems in teaching reading? (2) How do the teachers solve their problems in teaching reading?. This study used a descriptive design because there was no administration and control group as found in experimental research. All of the teachers of English in SLTPN 1 Plumpang were used as the population and they are consist of 4 teachers and all of population were taken as a sample by using population sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was structured interview and observation. Based on the analysis of data that were obtained from the four teachers through interview and observation, it was found 5 problems that can be categorized into two terms. Those are teacher’s problems toward the students and teacher’s problems toward teaching learning process. The teacher’s problems toward the students are 3 problems, namely, first, the limited vocabularies. Second, finding the meaning of difficulties vocabularies and the last is answering the question from the text implicitly. Meanwhile, the teacher’s problems toward the English teaching learning process are 2 problems, i.e., looking for the material, which is suitable with the ability of the students and providing the media in teaching learning process. The solutions of teacher’s problems toward the students are 3 solutions. Those are memorizing 5 new words from the text, guessing the meaning by using sentences and looking for in the dictionaries also guiding the students to understand the text clearly. Meanwhile, the solutions of teacher’s problems toward teaching learning process are 3 solutions, namely; giving duty to the member of MGMP who can draw the pictures as a media, providing the media which is available in the school, and the last is looking for the material such as newspaper, magazine and storybooks.
