Abstract

Jigsaw is one type of cooperative learning methods used to help students learn English fun. It provides students with the opportunities to develop effective social skills that will enable them become good members of society. This technique consists of several groups that have heterogeneous in ability, gender. Jigsaw contributes each member of each group to participate in having group’s goal. Every member of group has the important role; their contribution will complete the task. This study was aimed at describing the implementation of jigsaw technique in teaching reading used by the teacher at SMUN 1 Klakah Lumajang. This study describes achieving about the implementation of teaching reading using jigsaw technique in English class at SMU 1 Klakah Lumajang, the teacher role in teaching reading using jigsaw at SMU 1 Klakah, and the student’s role in teaching reading using jigsaw at SMU 1 Klakah. This study used descriptive qualitative research that the data collected were in the form of words or pictures rather than numbers. The subject of the study was one English teacher of first grade who implemented jigsaw technique in teaching reading. The data were obtained through observation and interview. The result of this study show that the teacher implement the jigsaw in teaching reading using stages such as specifying, deciding, choosing, assigning, structuring, discussing. The teacher roles are teacher as motivator, reflection partner, initiator, prime mover and mentor, administrator and as mediator. The student’s roles are students as writer/recorder, peer tutors, reader, questioner and helper. Based on the result of the implementation jigsaw technique in teaching reading at SMU 1 Klakah, the writer suggest that teacher should schedule the time of implementation jigsaw technique and to try the other technique in teaching reading
