Abstract

English structure is necessary to master because structure is one part of language components which are essential to understand the sentences. However, students often make mistake in structure because they do not comprehend well about the grammatical rule of English. This research was intended to describe the ability of the second year students of SMP 1 Suboh­Situbondo in learning English tenses. The tenses cover simple present tense, simple past tense, and simple continuous tense and simple future tense. The research design used in this study was descriptive research design. The instrument of this study is test of simple present tense, simple past tense, and simple continuous tense and simple future tense. The writer took four classes of second class as the population and took 25% (10) of the students in every class as the sample, so, 40 students of second class as the subjects of this research. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by using the mean formula. The formula used: The results of this study show that on the average, the ability of the second year students of SMP 1 Suboh­Situbondo in learning English tenses was moderate (M=64.62). On the average, the students’ mastery of simple present tense was good. (M=19.32), simple continuous tense was good (M=18.25), simple future tenses was moderate (M=13.87), but on the average, the students’ mastery of the simple past was poor (M=13.25). The higher scores were simple present tense, simple continuous and simple future tense. The lower score was simple past tense. Based on the results, the English teacher is suggested to pay more attention in teaching the tenses, particularly the simple past tense in order to improve the students’ ability in learning English tenses
