Abstract

Competency of critical and creative thinking among students is very important in the era of global competition because the level of complexity of the problem in the higher aspects of modern life. With an open mathematical problem solving provides ample opportunity to investigate mathematical problems in depth, so it can construct all possible solutions critically and creatively. This study aimed to determine (1) How is the competence of critical and creative thinking in mathematics, (2) to assess students' mathematical problem-solving process based on critical thinking and creative competence This research was carried out in SMP Negeri 2 Malang, in March 2010-April 2010 using the questionnaire method, test method and interview method. Based on the results of this study concluded: 1) the competence of students to think critically in learning mathematics of 3 indicator is release opinion, ability to oppose, desire of truth it’s mean 56% were categorized as good enough, 2) the competence of the creative thinking of students in learning math of 5 indicator is fluency, flexibility, originalit, laboratioan, evaluation its’s mean 54% and 3) the competence of students to think critically and creatively in solving the problem with the percentage of 60% which is quite good. Thus it can be concluded from the results of questionnaires, tests and interviews that the competence to think critically and creatively in SMP Negeri 2 poor is quite good. For further research is suggested to more specifik where the location of the difficulties of students in critical thinking and creative so the students can compete in this global era with the development of science and technology.
