Abstract

E. cottonii seaweed is a species of seaweed which can be found in aquatic area in Indonesia especially in aquatic area of Pamekasan, Madura island. Seaweed have a big benefit of phycocoloid from karaginan and gelatin made of seaweed and its cultivation technique are so easy and cheap. E. cottonii form a seaweed which have many photosynthesis pigment and other accessories pigments, those are chlorophil a, α-karoten, β-karoten, fikobilin, neozanthin dan zeaxanthin. This research conducted on July 2009 until January 2010, include in one stage conducted extraction of carotenoid pigment from E. cottonii seaweed and analysis of carotenoid value. The research program using RAK method with 2 factors and arranged on a factorial. Factor I: type of seaweed with 3 levels (red, green, brown) and factor II: type of solvent 4 levels (acetone, benzene, ethanol, ether&hexane) and 3 times repeating. The results of the research was: the best pigment of red E.cottonii seaweed was obtained from red seaweed and ethanol treatment by pH 6,93, lightness grade (L) 50,35, redness grade (a+) 8,65, yellowness grade (b+) 32,50, absorbtion 0,510, Rf result 37,500 and carotenoid value it contains 0,0001218. The best pigment of green E.cottonii seaweed was obtained from green seaweed by acetone treatment by pH 7,54, lightness grade (L) 50,80, redness grade (a+) 9,15, yellowness grade (b+) 30,25, absorbtion 0,521, Rf result 36,667 and carotenoid value it contains 0,0001218. The best pigment of brown E.cottonii was obtained from brown seaweed by ether&hexan treatment by pH 6,90, lightness grade (L) 48,75, redness grade (a+) 5,40, yellowness grade (b+) 28,40, absorbtion 0,464, Rf result 35,833 and carotenoid value it contains 0,0000973 ns.
