The phenomena of code switching used by the teacher in the instructional activities are interesting to study, as far as we can make some important clues in our study of sociolinguistics. The statements of problems are: what kinds of code switching used by the English teacher in instructional activities and why does the teacher use code switching in instructional activities. Based on the statement of problems the writer wants to give the information about the kinds of code switching used by the English teacher and to know the reason of the usage of code switching in instructional activities. The writer hope that this study will contribute something meaningful in Sociolinguistic, because it can provide a number of important clues of better understanding of fiction of human signs in the communication and the rule of speech variation in the speech community. Based on all of the explanation before the writer likes to take the title about, “CODE SWITCHING USED BY THE ENGLISH TEACHER IN INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES : THIS STUDY IS CONDUCTED IN SMA NEGERI I TUBAN” The writer uses the qualitative design to explain the phenomena of the usage of code switching in instructional activities. However, the appearances of code switching are phenomena in a social setting that is very interesting to research. The descriptive qualitative design is very fit to expose the social phenomena in our societies. Since the phenomena happen only in the location of research and the writer did not want to generalize the research result, so the writer takes the subject term in her research. The research subjects were the English teacher and the first year students of SMA NEGERI I Tuban. The researcher analyzes the natural discourse between the teacher and students in instructional activities. The writer uses the human instrument, which is the researcher herself who has an important role to jot down all the discourse. She observes, listens, records and interviews from the informants. The data were collected on May, 20th up to June, 07th 2005. The results of the study found by the writer are; first, the kinds of code switching used by the English teacher are some combination from External, Internal, Situational, Methaporical and Temporary Code Switching. The second, the reason of the usage of code switching are; code switching is used when the teacher feels tired, wants to emphasize the important point of the material, wants to refresh the class situation by making some jokes and wants to raise the students’ motivation.
