Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to describe the speaking instruction at Muhammaditah University of Malang in details such as (1) The activities of speaking instruction, (2) The technique of speaking instruction, (3) The method of speaking instruction, and (4) The assessment of speaking instruction, which were studied in order to conduct a comprehensive and integrated picture of the teaching English program. A descriptive qualitative research was used as the design of this study to collect all information to answer the problems. The data were obtained through interview and observation and were presented descriptively after being classified into related aspects. The result of this study showed that the activities of speaking instruction was not conducted as it had been planned in the class, because the lecturer just had the limited time. The techniques the lecturer used with debate, discussion, lecturing, and game. The methods employed in speaking instruction with communicative approach and total physical response. The assessment of the students’ progress was not fair, the lecturer used some criteria which accumulated the result of the students’ performance in the class, and their attendance. Concerning to the finding, the suggestion is offered for lecturer to allocate her time for teaching activities, to improve her techniques and method to apply the games and discussion. And the last is to use Judge Evaluation Form to assess the students’ progress.
