Abstract

English as a foreign language is taught as a school subjects for the purpose of providing the students with the skills of comprehending reading materials in various subjects. In this study the writer intends to observe the techniques used by the teacher in teaching reading comprehension, and their strengths and weaknesses. Technique of teaching reading used by the teacher is one of the factors that may determine the success of instruction. To strategize the current issue, an English teacher should have appropriate techniques to teach English reading more effectively and purposefully. In this study, the writer used descriptive research. The accessible population of this study was the first year students and the English teacher at SMK-NU MIFTAHUL HUDA Kepanjen-Malang. The writer took the English teacher and the number of students involved in this research is 39 students as sample, and it was equal with the needed percentage of the research which is accounted 25% from the population. The used methods to collect the data were observation, interview and questionnaire. Observation was used to collect the data about teacher’s activities in using the techniques of teaching reading comprehension, and the students’ condition at the time. Interview was applied in order to know what the techniques were exactly used by the teacher, and their strengths and weaknesses. The last method was questionnaire. It was given to the students purposefully to get the data about the students’ perception with the applied techniques. And those methods of research synergized each others. The result of the study shows that in general the techniques of teaching reading comprehension applied by the English teacher at SMK-NU MIFTAHUL HUDA Kepanjen-Malang are: description/explanation, group discussion and discovery techniques. there are some points in favor and some points against the use of these applied techniques as well. Those techniques are used under deep consideration of what really happened in the class. What the students need is an intensive handling of the teacher to overcome their problems about word- recognition skills and comprehension skills.
