Abstract

Indonesia film development nowadays tend to be fill with stories which performing youth life and horror theme. A film called Angel’s Cry precisely perform a story about children who lost their parents because of Bali Blast which occurred in the year of 2002 and put forward the life of children which full of struggling to facing hardness life. A film by Teddy Setyadi also become one of movie using child’s theme which presenting social values. The frame of child’s life considered as a new interesting topic to appointed and presented an a film so it will be a new discourse in society and also giving a different view about child’s identity inside their life as a social reality form. Based on the background, so the problem which fixed from this research is to understand the meaning about child’s identity which performed in Angel’s Cry film. Film is one of a mass communication kind which able to reflecting the reality of life society because it can describe a lot of sosio­cultural life dimension in society, including a group identity. In etymology, identity means distinctive features. While identity concept in psychologically means to a consciousness for personal unity and continuity also a conviction which remained same as long as a way of human life development although changes happened. A film is considered able to presenting identity or certain image. On a film text, ideology is working not only inside the content, but also in a form. Because ideology operates not through a direct expression, so it can’ be seen as a direct statement. In other word, ideology is hiding inside the narrative structure, codes, convension, and images which constructed through film language. Semiotic can defined as a science which study carefully a whole of objects, moments, and all cultures as a sign. Semiotic which used in this research are Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic and Roland Barthes’ semiotic. The research methodology is qualitative which use semiotic methods analysis from Peirce which concerned signs element which are, index, icon, symbol and semiotic from Barthes, where signs is given with denotative and connotative meaning without put myth existence aside to get general definition or description and relatively comprehensive about the researched problem. This research unit analysis is Angel’s Cry film which in audio visual format, with total duration 95 minutes 5 second. But in this research, researcher only took some scene and shot which relevan with research theme. Main data is Angel’s Cry film which documented in VCD form. Whereas the secondary data from library research, same research and from website. Based on the fixed problem in semiotic analysis of Angel’s Cry film for describing child’s identity through semiotic analysis from Peirce and Barthes, as following: child is a fragile person and relatively unable also depends on other people, having ability to act aggressively and anti­ social, having inclined to make groups. Whereas through Strauss’ semiotic analysis, childcharacter in film performed as a controlled, regulated, and fragile person. The ideology which stays in this film is marked with not take side to child’s identity. On the whole, this film inclined of giving negative view and inflicted a loss upon child’s identity because it’s performing the child’s weakness. Child is describe always powerless and susceptible having a domination by parents under circumstances and often to be the victim from unfair society hierarchy and being treated as a defeated side. This things can show that weakness is exist on children so it can make them as a victim from their social circle that should protect them so they can be a next youth generation who continuing the nation existence.
