Learning English is not an easy step that can be managed in a short time, especially in acceleration program because in this program, students have to learn and memorize all materials of English faster than those who are in regular classes. The researcher intended to investigate the learning style used by the students in acceleration class in learning English. The purposes of this study were to know the kinds of learning styles, and to know the learning style mostly used by the students in Acceleration class at MAN 03 Malang. This study used descriptive research design because the researcher wanted to describe the English learning style used by the students in acceleration class. The respondents were the eleventh grade students at MAN 03 Malang in the academic year 20082009. There were 10 students in acceleration class. Afterwards, they were given the Likert Scale on English learning styles. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students used all of the learning styles, especially modalities. The most learning style used among six styles employed by the students in learning English was kinesthetic style with the mean score 50, which was appropriate with their intellectual characteristics. The mean score for tactile styles was 48, auditory with mean score 46.8, individual was 45.2, group was 44.6, and visual styles was 34.4 as shown in table II. In conclusion, the learning styles used by the students in Acceleration class at MAN 03 Malang was vary based on their way of learning. This learning style used to improve the student’s ability in learning English. Therefore, the students in Acceleration class at MAN 03 Malang are prospective language learners or we called them gifted students, because they are structuring or synthetic thinkers.
