Abstract

Elder people is one phase of human development, where in this phase, all human organ function is different with previous phase which could be said as productive, it has significant decreased. By entering elder time, there would be seen mental, physical, and psychological elder sign. Oneof them, short term memory in elder people decreased, so they had difficulty to remember the event happened in fast, like recalling name of people who they had just met, recalling information they had just received. So it is important to increase short term memory in elder people so that they could run their daily activity without any dependency to another people and also still productive as elder people in foreign countries. Through memory training, elder people could increase their short term memory, since the training is a practical training describing techniques planned to give strategy how to remember information they had just received. The research consisted of 8 training, some of them anagram, mix alphabets, routes, “DOR” number, memory concentration, deeper attention, pay attention to the peer, and row number. The research aimed to find out the increase of short term memory ability in elder people through memory training. Method used in this research was experiment approach with free variable consisted of memory training and the dependent variable was short term memory. Data arrangement was done by three ways, they were short term memory measurement tool for pretest and posttest, memory training for treatment and observation along treatment activity. Data found from 22 members of Posyandu Lansia (Elder People Care) RW XI, where 11 elder people as subject of experiment group and 11 elder people as control group. Group determining was done by randomized matching. While data analysis technique used Independent simple ttest by the support of SPSS version 13.00 for windows program. From data analysis, there concluded that there was short term memory increasing in experiment group while control group has no increasing and stay on short term memory. So there could be concluded that there was an influence of memory training to the increasing of short term memory in elder people.
