Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the English skills that are important for the first year students of SMKN 3 Malang; to investigate the appropriate objectives in learning the fourth English skills for the first year students of SMKN 3 Malang. In addition to this, investigating the appropriate materials, methods and evaluations in learning reading, speaking, listening, and writing for the first year students of SMKN 3 Malang are also the objective of the study. This research design is a descriptive. The subject of the study was all the first grade students of Beauty Department. Therefore, the sampling technique of this research was the writer takes whole of students Beauty Department in the first grade at SMKN 3 Malang. The research instrument used was in the form of questionnaire. The finding shows that the highest important English skill was reading, followed by speaking, listening, and writing. The appropriate objectives of reading were able to comprehend textbook and able to comprehend magazine. The dominant objective of speaking was able to speak with foreigner. The appropriate objectives of listening were able to comprehend English song and comprehend English dialogue. The appropriate objective of writing was able to write a story in English. The dominant of materials of reading, speaking, and writing were from a textbook. The appropriate material of listening was from a cassette tape recorder. The dominant method of reading and writing was assignment. The appropriate method of speaking was question and answer. The appropriate method of listening the highest was speech. The appropriate evaluation of reading and speaking the highest was answering question based on the text. The appropriate evaluation of listening was completing answers. The appropriate evaluation of writing was retelling the tex.
