Abstract
There are many types of writing that have taught to the students at English Department, such as: expository writing, persuasive, descriptive, argumentative, and narrative writing. In this study the researcher focused on the errors in narrative writing faced by fourth semester students at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Since narrative writing is difficult and some of the students still make errors, it proves that some of students aren’t able to write a story, a journal, and narrative writing yet. The research directed toward on the structure / elements’ errors of narrative writing, namely: introductory paragraph, body, climax, and conclusion paragraph of narrative writing. The purpose of this study were to know the students’ errors and dominant error on narrative writing. In this case, the researcher used the fourth semester students at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang as population of this research because they got advance of writing. The students in the four semester were divided into five classes; A, B, C, D, and E, the total of research population was 242 students. The researcher used class IVA as the sample or subject of research. In addition, this research used purposive sampling technique because she wanted to research class IVA as the top class. The total number in sample or subject of research was 40 students. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. It designed to obtain information concerning the status of phenomena and it aimed that a numerical measures are never used, but that other means of description are emphasized. The instrument of this research was the form of free composition test. The writing test was researched into subjective scoring in which the students were required to construct narrative writing. Based on the data analysis, it could be concluded that the students had errors in the elements of narrative writing. The errors in the introductory paragraph were12,72%, the errors in the body paragraph were 16,36%, the errors in the climax were 52,73% and the errors in the conclusion were 18,18%. In addition, the students had dominant errors in the climax of narrative writing.
