Abstract
English has a big effect in our life. Almost every part of life uses English as a tool for information transfer. This condition forces students to learn English, especially to increase their vocabulary. This can be done through regular classes, courses, or even reading a newspaper. In sport section many English terms that can be used as an alternative in learning English vocabulary. Based on this reason, the writer takes this object as her study. This study is a descriptive study because it is designed to obtain information concerning the current status of phenomena. This study analyzes the word classes, idioms and phrases appearing in Jawa Pos. The population is the four issues of Jawa Pos printed on May 27, July 9, July 10, and July 11, 2003, and the sports terms written are the sample of this study. The data was collected by documentary observation techniques. First, the writer choose four editions of Jawa Pos. Second, she selected the sports column and finally she made the sports terms in clippings. After analyzing the data, it can be found that the English sports terms written in Jawa Pos newspaper was words 41 (70,68 %), 11 (18,96 %) idioms, and 6 (10,34 %) for phrases. Noun has the greatest number in each part of terms whether in a form of words, idioms constructed or in phrases constucted. The writer concludes that English sports terms written in Jawa Pos are multifarious. Reading sport column, students can get some vocabulary and indirectly increase their vocabulary. Finally, in relation to the findings of the study, some suggestion are offered to encourage the students to read sport news and for teachers to use this material in teaching learning. For the next research, there are so many sections of the newspaper that can be analyzed and give us some benefits.
