Abstract

To make successful teaching and learning process, teachers need a certain curriculum as a teaching plan to help them. As the importance of curriculum, the syllabus also holds the important role to help improve educational practices and to achieve the goal of teaching learning. In syllabus development, the teachers have to create a good syllabus in order to make students understand the material easily. Related to the statement above, this study was conducted to know the problem of developing syllabus faced by English teachers at SMA Negeri 2 Batu. The research design of this study was descriptive research because the writer wanted to describe the current status of phenomenon. The current status of phenomenon in this research was the problem of developing syllabus faced by English teachers. In this research, the writer took three English teachers as a research subject. The instruments which are used in this study were documentation and interview. The result of the study showed that the English teachers who developed syllabus faced problem in developing syllabus. The first problem is the materials in curriculum that was insufficient. The teacher took solution by developing the material as much as possible in order to achieve the competence of the students. The second is low student motivation, and the solution is giving interesting materials so the students’ motivation increased. The third problem is MGMP’s syllabus, and the solution is doing some revisions to the material, so, the materials could be synchronized between MGMP’s syllabus and student’s need. The last problem is national examination. The teacher took solution by asking the student to study hard and also asking to joined with some courses in some institutions of education
