Abstract

Geometry is a branch of mathematics that is taught from elementary school through college. Some research showed that many students at junior high school level have difficulty in geometry. The level of students thinking in Geometric, can describe the students capabilities in geometric. Van Hiele stated that in understanding the geometry, students could have through five consecutive stages, they are stage 0 (visualization), stage 1 (analysis), stage 2 (informal deduction), stage 3 (deduction) and stage 4 (rigor). This study aimed to describe the ability of junior high school students based on the geometry of the Van Hiele level. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII-G SMP Negeri 4 Malang and class VIII-B and VIII-C SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. This study is a qualitative-quantitative study using test instruments. This study uses instruments Van Hiele Geometry Test (VHGT) developed by Prof. Zalman Usiskin and test geometry capabilities. Analyses were performed using the Z-test, Manny-Whitney test and Spearman and Kendal Correlation. The results of this study showed that the level of student thinking in geometry cannot describe the geometry capabilities of students, because the geometry’s ability of junior high school students at every stage of the Van Hiele thinking has no difference, which means that every level of the Van Hiele abilities of the students have the same geometry ability. The correlation analysis showed that there is a correlation between the ability of geometry with Van Hiele level is very weak, it means that the high stage of the Van Hiele level of the students will increase the ability of student’s geometry with a relatively small increase in capability.
