Abstract

Mathematics is a subject that assume as difficult subject for most students. It can be seen from the number of students who make mistakes in solving the problems related to arithmetic. Arithmetic problems are closely related to the numbers and operations. There are many students who make mistakes in solving numbers and operations problems. The errors that made by the student in solving numbers and operations problems are different. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of mistakes made by students in solving arithmetic problems on a number and operations materials and the factors that cause students make mistakes in solving arithmetic problems. The research approach used in this study was a qualitative approach. The data collection obtained from the results of the written test and interview. Written test and interview conducted in SMP 11 Malang to the 39 students of VIII G class as a subject. The research design used was daily test that was held in one meeting. The technique of data identification used was non-statistical data. The data that shown was not a series of numbers instead of words. After all the data collected, then the identification data was done that includes three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the test results were known the mistakes that made by the students were translation errors, misconceptions, errors of strategy, and the error of count. The factors that caused were a lack of interest in learning, dislike mathematics, the assumption that mathematics is a set of formulas that must be memorized so that it is difficult to regard math, lazy in counting, lazy to think, do not understand the problems, do not mastering the concept and lack of accuracy in the calculation .
