Abstract

The selection of an appropriate strategy will impact the students learning outcomes. One of strategy that may involve students actively from beginning of learning then the learning outcomes can increase is Crossword Puzzle. The purpose of this study was to increase the students activity and learning outcomes through the implementation of active learning strategy type Crossword Puzzle in the mathematics learning. This research used active learning strategy type Crossword Puzzle with peer tutor learning model. The type of this research was classroom action research with qualitative and descriptive quantitative approach. The data collection collected from the observation to the learning process and learning outcomes. The research subject was the students class VIII B of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang containing 22 students that 4 students was the children with special needs and 1 student was never coming to the research. The results of the research showed that the implementation of active learning strategy type Crossword Puzzle could improve the students activity and learning outcomes. The implementation of this strategy was through the students worksheet that was containing crossword puzzle with students worksheet-A about relation and function, students worksheet-B about function value and students worksheet-C about function form. The students activity improvement in cycle I was achieving 75% with good category, while in cycle II was achieving 95% with excellent category. The students learning outcomes improvement could be seen from pre action results, cycle I and cycle 2. In pre action results, the number of students achieving the learning success only 4 students (23.53%). While in the cycle I the number of students achieving the learning success was increasing up to 11 students (64.70%) and in the cycle II was increasing up to 15 students (88.23%). The conclusion of the study was the implementation of active learning strategy type Crossword Puzzle could improve the students activity and learning outcomes in mathematics lesson.
