Abstract

Divergent thinking skills is the thinking ability to solve the problem by using a lot of ways to generate a lot of correct completion. A teacher must choose the right approach to develop divergent thinking ability of students. One approach that can be applied to develop divergent thinking ability of students is an open-ended approach. Open-ended approach is an approach of learning that has many way of result and many correct answers. This study aimed to describe the feasibility of study of mathematics process by applying open-ended approach and divergent thinking ability of students through open-ended approach. This study was conducted on 20 May 2013 until 27 May 2013 in the second semester of academic year 2012/2013 in the Islamic Elementary School fourth grade Daarul Fikri DAU Malang by the number of students 16 children. The data collection technique is using observation sheets of implementation of learning that used to observe the open-ended of learning orientation phase, open problem briefing, working on the open problem individually, and closing whereas the written test is used to see the divergent thinking ability of students based on aspects of fluency, flexibility, and authenticity. The research’s result on the implementation of the open-ended learning based on observation of teacher and students activities show that open-ended learning that includes steps of orientation, open problem briefing and working on the open problem individually is in Very Good category, while the closing step is in the Good category. Overall the open-ended syntax is in Very Good category. As for divergent thinking ability of students reviewed in terms of fluency, flexibility, and originality are in Good category. Therefore open-ended approach is need to be applied in mathematics learning process in order to further developing studentÂ’s divergen thinking ability.
