Abstract

This study aims to determine the steps of student problem solving and class VIII error in SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu on resolving prisma and pyramid material matter which version of Polya, namely in terms of understanding the problem, problem-solving plan, carry out problem solving, as well as examine the processes and outcomes. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects of this study was a class VIII D student by the number of 32 students as a classroom test and students in grade VIII E by the number of 31 students as classroom study. The data was collected using a research instrument in the form of three stories about the prism and pyramid material and interviews with several students. The results of the test question conclusion are that the instruments used valid and reliable. Survey results revealed that students' problem solving are based on 16.129% of students who complete the troubleshooting steps in terms of Polya and 83.87% of students who did not complete the troubleshooting steps in terms of Polya. There are 83.870% of students are working on a story about a student working on a 4.301% correct on the story, and 79.569% of students who do wrong on a story about the prism and pyramid material. Meanwhile, the mistakes of the student in solving word problems prism and pyramid material observed from Polya version as follows: 1) Error step to understand the problems of 51.612%, as for the mistakes made by students that is equal to 47.311% of students either in the identification of what is known and 45.161% of the students either in the identification of what is sought, 2) Errors step problem solving plan for 73.118%, as for the mistakes made by students that is equal to 76.344% of students incorrectly use the correct formula and by 63.440% of students incorrectly use the information known to develop new information. 3) Errors troubleshooting steps to implement the plan of 76.344%, and 4) the error checking step process and outcome of 93.548%.
