Abstract

The teaching of mathematics for cube and block nets for 5-grade students of Public Elementari School 2 Sumberbening was found implementing a conventional lecturing method. The students showed less involvement during the teaching and learning process. Accordingly, the teacher delivered the knowledge in one way direction without the student’s active involvement and response. Moreover, various teaching methods have never been applied to solve the problem. Therefore, inquiry training model was proposed to overcome the problem in terms of improving the student’s involvement, response and awareness in their learning achievement. This study aimed at describing (1) the implementation of inquiry training model (2) the student’s independent learning during the implementation of inquiry training model (3) the student’s learning achievement after the implementation of inquiry training model. The study employed descriptive-qualitative design. The subjects of the study were 25 students of Public Elementary School 2 Sumberbening academic year 2011/2012. They comprised 16 male and 9 female students. The study was conducted on may 29-31, 2012. The findings showed that the inquiry training model has been successfully implemented in some stages: problem confrontation, data collection and verification, data collecting and experiment, organization and interpreting formulation, and inquiry process analysis. Moreover, the inquiry training models significantly improved student’s independence and involvement during the teaching and learning process with good category. The student’s learning achievement was described with 22 students successfully accomplishing the minimum criteria and 3 failed students.
