Abstract

The research was conducted due to student’s motivation and interest in learning mathematics is still low as well as the material being taught is not appropriate to the maturity of the students. Therefore, teacher must be able to master the principles of learning, to select and to use teaching methods. Teachers must be competent and selective in choosing methods and strategies for effective and efficient learning. The purpose of this study to find an effective and efficient learning strategy in teaching three-dimensional material for grade X of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu by applying contextual learning REACT strategy on learning mathematics. This classroom action research was conducted through two cycles and each cycle includes the activity of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subject for this classroom action research was the students of grade X SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. The study was conducted by applying REACT contextual learning strategy which was then observed using observation sheet, then conduct an evaluation. Observation sheet was used to determine activity of teacher and students when the learning activities take place. While the evaluation was used to determine the level of understanding of students who demonstrate learning completeness. This class action research which conducted by two cycles showed an increase in the effectiveness of mathematics learning. It could be seen from the activities of teacher and students as well as the completeness of student’s learning. This increase was shown by the difference between cycle I and cycle II on teacher’s activity increased by 18.2%, student’s activity increased by 20%, and the completeness of student’s learning increased by 41.2%. Based on the finding of this classroom action research, mathematics teaching for grade X of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu had already implemented REACT contextual learning strategy according to the lesson plan. Although there were still some obstacles encountered in the cycle I, but these constraints were much reduced in the cycle II. Thus, mathematics learning using REACT contextual learning strategy can be used as an alternative of learning strategies that can be applied in an effort to improve the effectiveness of learning mathematics.
