Abstract

Most of Mathematic concepts are abstract that difficult to be understood by the students. These difficulties may lead conceptual mistake where it leads procedural mistake on doing mathematic exercises. This study is conducted to answer the research questions proposed: 1) what mistakes are ade related to student understanding of concepts and procedures in class VII, the subject atter lines and angles in SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu, 2) what factors cause VII grade students in junior high school Muhammadiyah 8 Batu make a mistake in understanding the concepts and procedures of material with the subject line and angle when the completion of the questions? This type of research is the study uses a case study approach with this type of descriptive-qualitative research. The object of this study is the students' grade VII-A SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. The collection of the data uses the test and interview sheet. The test is given only once after lines and angles lesson is completely discussed, and interviews conducted to the students (respondents) that most make mistakes. Based on the results obtained that (1) The students? mistake on completing the lesson of geometry on lines and angles included (a) conceptual mistake made by students because students do not understand the material of lines and angles, moreover the students also do not understand the prerequisites material, (b) the procedural mistake done by the students happened because the students are applying solving steps inappropriately, (2) The factors cause students? mistake in completing geometry lesson of angle and line consist of two factors: ( a) Internal factor such as students?s psychological factors which included students 'cognitive abilities, less intensity of exercises, students are careless and less careful or less rigorous in solving problems, as well as students' lack of concentration when the material is taught or when the test is given, (b) External factor such as the environment which included notebooks are limited, the means of learning facilities, and the concept of prerequisite material is difficult to understand.
