Abstract

In active learning students are seen as subjects rather than objects and learning process more considered than teaching. However, based on the researcher?s observations during she became a practice teacher in SMP 12 Malang, students actually less of active participation in the learning process. Students are likely does not have critical thinking in facing learning problem and less of creativity in developing their thought. Students tend to have a strong unwillingness to study. In this case, the researcher saw that the students just come, sit, silent, and just listen to the teacher?s explanations only. We can see they might be lack of an understanding the material being studied. Based on the terms described above, it takes a model of learning that can enhance students' critical thinking and creative in learning mathematics. It can be developed through learning methods using probing techniques. The research was conducted in SMP Negeri 12 Malang, with 38 students of grade VIII-B as the subject. This study aims to describe the usage of probing techniques using visual aids to learning mathematics through observation of the activities of teachers and student in the class. On the other hand, to determine the student learning outcomes which was obtained from tests as well as student responses after learning by using probing techniques. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach, and the type of research is descriptive research. The research was conducted in four meetings, the three meetings for observe the learning process and one-time learning process is used to test the students. The data were obtained from observation, tests and questionnaires. Based on the results of the analysis on the teachers and students activities in using probing techniques using visual aids in learning mathematics reach the number of 72.34% and the students? activity is about 71.69% that can be concluded into the good category. Based on the results of tests administered can be seen that 38 students who took the tests obtained the percentage of students who completed their study of 84.21% and students who have not completed their study of 15.79%. Based on the data, classically that class is reaching a successful in learning mathematics using probing techniques for studying a flat side of solid figures, because the numbers of students who have reached the exhaustiveness learn more than 75%. Based on the results of the questionnaires analysis, in order to obtain an average score of 80.95 which is considered as a strong data.
